nematodes for natural control of leatherjackets and grubs

Safe for birds, effective against leatherjackets. An effective natural control agent using nematodes.

Leatherjackets and grubs
Leatherjackets are the larvae of crane flies and grubs are the larvae of  beetles. these larvae can be found just underneath the rootsystem of grass. They can do serious damage to grassfields by eating the roots, causing the grasses to die. This is seen as a change in colour from green to yellow. When leatherjackets are present you can often also see small holes in the ground.

Natural control with nematodes
Nematodes are tiny worms that can be found in the gound naturally. This species of nematodes can be used as control agent for leatherjackets and grubs but is harmless for other animals. The nematodes need to be mixed with water after which they can be sprayed over the grass. Once applied the nematodes will enter the larvae which makes them sick and causes them to stop eating. After a couple of days the larvae die. Birds can still feed on the leatherjackets and grubs once infected and won't be harmed. Nematodes can best be applied in the evening. At this point there is less sunlight so the mixture won't dry as quick, which is beneficial.

Nematodes have a limited shelf life but can be stored for some weeks at 5-8 degrees celsius. See box for the exact expiration date.
